The Corporation for Public Broadcasting
(PBS) – an organization funded by your tax dollars – is at it again. With Election Day
2006 less then 60 short days away, PBS is producing and airing
biased pieces of yellow journalism that insinuate the Bush administration
and Republican legislators across the country are engaging in a campaign
to deny minorities and poor the right to vote. One of these
fabrications – produced under the guise of a news program – “Block the
Vote” starts out as follows:
Announcer:
“Your right to vote may not be as safe as you think.”
Unidentified
African-American Woman: “This is a concerted effort to make sure
that certain people don’t have the opportunity to vote.”
Two
of the more outrageous allegations in this program concern recently
enacted state laws that require people to present a valid photo I.D.
when voting and require those who are conducting voter registration
drives to turn in voter registration applications within 10 days of the
applications being filled out. Now these laws may seem
like reasonable measures to minimize voter fraud and protect the rights
of all of us who actually have a legal right to vote, but PBS obviously
thinks otherwise. “Block the Vote” features a
healthy dose of biased reporting and interviews with so-called experts;
such as the left-wing League of Women Voters and David Becker of Norman
Lear’s People for the American Way Foundation. The reporting is rather
convincing – the only problem is that it is also purposely misleading and
disingenuous. And who is the real villain
who is trying to “disenfranchise” minority voters? According to PBS
Senior Correspondent Maria Hinojosa, it’s none other than President Bush!
"And what's more,
civil rights advocates say ... the Bush administration is part of the
problem. The U.S. department of justice, which is responsible for
enforcing the voting rights act, has signed off on some of these
restrictive laws."
But
what is even more outrageous is that PBS apparently plans to bombard the
American public with more biased and deceptive “news pieces” like “Block
the Vote” in the days ahead – using your tax dollars. Yesterday, PBS released yet
another piece titled, “Down for the Count” which is nothing more than a
veiled attempt to discredit the election process and potentially give
losing Democrats ammunition to frivolously contest races that they lost
in the courts (remember the Gore-Lieberman debacle of 2000?). But don’t take our word for
it! You can view both of these disgusting biased pieces of yellow
journalism on the PBS website. “Block
the Vote” -- http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/235/index.html“Down
for the Count” -- http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/236/index.htmlAnd if you are as disgusted as
we are by this biased and outrageous misuse of your tax dollars you can
take action by calling the Corporation for Public Broadcasting at
202-879-9600. After you make that call, don’t forget to click here and contact
your Senators and United States Congressman, and sound off to them as
well. PBS
relies on your tax dollars. Their actions are inexcusable and you
have the right to take them to task and hold them to account!
