Incident
Recently I received a flyer in my mail that advertised Cox's Internet service
as, "cheaper than dial-up," at 14.95 per month. The flyer has all the
official appearance of a Cox Company correspondence, including the COX
letterhead. However, the phone number to call is not the usual number I CALL
FOR UPGRADES OR CHANGE-OF-SERVICE orders. The deal advertises nothing but,
14.95 for 4 months, in huge letters and of course is too good to be true. I called
anyway out of curiosity. The sales agent immediately quoted me a different
price of, 19.95 FOR 2 MONTHS, until I READ THE PRICE TO HIM FROM THE AD IN MY
HAND. He quickly switched to selling me on that offer, and offered to schedule
installation that very day, even including a refurbished modem for only a penny
more...no mention of any fees other than my account would go up to 29.99 per
month after 4 months. That didn’t sound too bad, so I took his number and
promised to call him back personally to place the order, should I decide to
accept. Today when I called, he was not there, so....too bad, I just decided to
speak to a different sales person. She started with the same 19.95 pitch and
switched to the 14.95 deal when reminded of it. But, she told me the 14.95 deal
did not include installation. She was sorry, but that was for self-install
customers only. If I NEEDED installation service, that is an additional 39.99.
That, "cheaper than dial-up," service would raise my cable bill from
approx. 60.00 to 90.00 per month, and I get to pay 40 BUCKS MORE FOR THE Privilege.
I'm just here to complain about the tactics of broardbandpromotions.com and the
notion that they can separate promises and tactics made by an authorized agent
from themselves. In most jurisdictions a contract with an authorized agent is
as binding as if you in your own writing. It just seems as though Cox and other
Internet businesses are trying to rewrites the law in illegibly fine print. I
FOR ONE AM OFFENDED!
Damage Resulting
No specific damage. Simply disgust with business practices in general that
insult consumer intelligence. How stupid are we? Why $39.99, AND NOT $40 doesn’t
anyone wonder or care enough to speak up anymore? It is sad. Perhaps we are
getting exactly what we deserve.
